CNC Machinist Tools
CNC machinists use a wide range of tools to set up machines, measure components, verify tolerances and finish parts. The exact toolkit depends on the machine, the work and what the employer supplies, but several tools are useful in almost every shop.
Precision Measuring Tools
- Calipers: Dial, digital or vernier calipers provide quick measurements of outside dimensions, inside dimensions, depths and steps.
- Outside micrometers: Used when a dimension requires greater precision than a general-purpose caliper can reliably provide.
- Depth micrometers and depth gauges: Measure recesses, slots, counterbores and other features below a reference surface.
- Inside micrometers and bore gauges: Check hole diameters and other internal features.
- Gauge blocks, gauge pins and thread gauges: Provide known reference sizes for inspection, comparison and instrument checks.
- Machinist rules: Useful for layout work and approximate measurements where precision inspection is unnecessary.
Machine Setup and Alignment Tools
- Dial indicators: Check position, alignment, runout and variation across a surface.
- Dial test indicators: Commonly used for indicating vises, locating bores and making sensitive comparative measurements.
- Magnetic bases and indicator holders: Hold indicators securely during setup and inspection.
- Edge finders and electronic probes: Establish workpiece edges, centers and machine-coordinate reference points.
- Machinist squares: Check whether surfaces and setups are square.

Everyday Hand Tools

Loose clothing, hands and compressed air should not be used carelessly around chips or moving machinery. Shop procedures and machine-specific safety rules always take priority.
Reference and Calculation Tools
- Machinery reference handbook: Supplies information on threads, fits, materials, speeds, feeds and shop mathematics.
- Scientific or machinist calculator: Helps with trigonometry, coordinate calculations and unit conversions.
- Notebook and permanent marker: Useful for recording offsets, setup details, inspection results and tool changes.
Choosing a Starter Toolkit
New machinists should first determine which tools their school or employer provides. A sensible personal starter set often includes a 6-inch caliper, an outside micrometer covering the most common work range, a test indicator with a suitable holder, a machinist rule, hex keys, a deburring tool and a calculator.
Buy tools according to the tolerances you must hold rather than accumulating equipment indiscriminately. Measurement range, resolution, accuracy, repeatability and calibration requirements all matter. Precision instruments should be kept clean, protected from impacts and stored in their cases when not in use.
Good Measurement Practice
- Clean the part and the measuring faces.
- Confirm that the instrument is suitable for the dimension and tolerance.
- Check zero or verify the instrument against an appropriate reference.
- Allow hot parts to cool before final inspection when temperature could affect the result.
- Use consistent measuring pressure and proper alignment.
- Record critical results and follow the shop's calibration procedures.
Owning a tool is only the beginning. Reliable CNC work depends on knowing when to use each instrument, understanding its limitations and applying a consistent inspection method.
