CNC Machinist Job Description

A machinist’s duties depend largely on the type of machine shop. Typical work includes setting up CNC machines, loading or creating part programs, preparing fixtures, loading and running parts, deburring, and inspecting finished parts to ensure they are within tolerance.

The range of possible tasks is extensive. CNC machinists must solve problems, often drawing on prior experience to determine what to do and when to do it. Experience is therefore one of the most important traits of a skilled machinist.

What You Must Know Before CNC Machinist Training

CNC machining requires mechanical aptitude, manual skill, the ability to learn quickly, and daily problem-solving. Machinists operate expensive equipment, and a momentary mistake can damage a machine or ruin a part that already represents substantial labor and production time.

Everyone makes mistakes, but careful attention and experience can reduce their frequency.

Inspection and Process Adjustment

A machinist must be able to inspect finished parts and determine whether they meet specified tolerances. When a part is out of tolerance, the machinist may need to adjust a tool offset, work offset, or another process variable.

Essential knowledge includes blueprint reading and the proper use of basic inspection tools and references, such as:

  • Micrometers
  • Calipers
  • Gauges
  • Drill charts

As machinists gain experience and become able to work more independently, they generally qualify for greater responsibility and potentially higher pay. Employers may also require clear written communication and workplace screening.

Computer and Programming Skills

Basic computer skills are increasingly important in CNC machining. Experience with CAD/CAM software can be a major advantage for machinists who want to move into programming.

CNC programmers create part programs using 3D programming software. Shop-floor machinists must communicate effectively with programmers and engineers to confirm that designs and manufacturing processes will work and to help correct problems when they arise.

Workplace Safety

A CNC machinist is responsible for helping maintain a safe working environment. This requires understanding how the machines operate and recognizing actions or situations that could create hazards. Manufacturing problems can develop quickly, making safety awareness essential.
