Starting or transitioning to a new machining job can be difficult. You have new coworkers, unfamiliar machines, different procedures, and a great deal of information to absorb. Your first week is less about proving that you know everything and more about showing that you are safe, dependable, attentive, and willing to learn.

Arrive Ready to Work
Be punctual, wear the required personal protective equipment, and bring any tools or inspection equipment the employer asked you to provide. Learn the shop’s expectations for breaks, timekeeping, housekeeping, and shift handoffs.
Put Safety First
Before operating unfamiliar equipment, ask about its controls, guarding, emergency stops, lockout procedures, and approved operating practices. Never reach into a running machine, defeat an interlock, or take a shortcut because you feel pressured to work faster.
Listen and Take Notes
A new shop may perform familiar work in an unfamiliar way. Pay close attention during training and record useful details such as machine startup procedures, tool locations, inspection intervals, offset rules, and who must approve a setup or program change.
Ask Clear Questions

Keep the Work Area Organized
Return tools to their proper places, control chips safely, clean spills promptly, and leave the machine ready for the next person. Good housekeeping supports safety, accuracy, and efficient shift changes.
Communicate Problems Early
Report damaged tools, unexpected dimensions, alarms, unusual sounds, questionable material, and suspected program errors immediately. If you make a mistake, stop the process when safe, preserve the relevant information, and tell the appropriate lead or supervisor.
