What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments, we collect the information shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user-agent string, to assist with spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address, also called a hash, may be provided to the Gravatar service to determine whether you use it. You can review the Gravatar service privacy policy. After your comment is approved, your profile picture may be publicly visible alongside it.

Media

If you upload images to the website, avoid including embedded location data such as EXIF GPS information. Website visitors may be able to download images and extract that location data.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may choose to save your name, email address, and website in cookies. These convenience cookies prevent you from having to enter the same details again when leaving another comment and last for one year.

If you have an account and log in, the site sets a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. It contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, the site also sets cookies that save your login information and screen-display preferences. Login cookies last for two days, while screen-option cookies last for one year. If you select “Remember Me,” your login persists for two weeks. Logging out removes the login cookies.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie is saved in your browser. It contains no personal data, identifies the post you edited, and expires after one day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles may include embedded content such as videos, images, or articles. Embedded content behaves as though you visited the originating website directly.

Those websites may collect information about you, use cookies, add third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with their content. This may include tracking your activity when you have an account with the third-party website and are logged in to it.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This allows the site to recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For registered users, if any, the site stores the personal information supplied in each user profile. Users can view, edit, or delete their personal information at any time, except that usernames cannot be changed. Website administrators can also view and edit this information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account or have left comments, you may request an exported file containing the personal data held about you, including information you supplied. You may also request deletion of your personal data. This does not include information the site must retain for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
