Getting Started With CNC Programming

CNC programming turns a part plan into the instructions a machine control can use. It builds on an understanding of the machine, tooling, workholding, measurements and the material being cut.

Build the foundation first

Hands-on familiarity with setups and operations provides useful context for programming. Blueprint reading, shop math and the ability to check a finished feature are equally important.

Learn the control and the process

G-code and machine-control concepts are only part of the picture. Programming decisions also involve tooling, feeds and speeds, safe clearances and how a part will be held and inspected.

Training may happen with experienced colleagues, through an employer or in a machining course. Follow the procedures of the machine, shop and instructor when practicing.
