CNC Machinist
A CNC machinist makes parts according to technical drawings. Whether working in a small job shop or a large production facility, the machinist operates computer-controlled equipment—most commonly CNC mills and lathes—to produce parts within the tolerances specified on the blueprint.
Some employers hire through staffing agencies, often using temp-to-hire arrangements. Reliable and efficient temporary workers may later be offered permanent employment, benefits, and higher wages.
CNC Machinist Job Description
Machine shops may produce medical, aerospace, government, or aftermarket components. A machinist’s duties vary according to the type of shop and its production model.
In a production shop, a machinist may load dozens or hundreds of parts onto fixtures and deburr completed pieces. Jobs often have longer cycle times and may continue for several months.
In a smaller job shop, machinists typically perform more setups and shorter production runs. They may work on a different part each day and, depending on their experience, set up jobs and edit programs when corrections are needed.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Loading and removing parts
- Inspecting parts to confirm that they are within tolerance
- Solving machining and production problems
- Editing programs, feeds, and speeds
- Deburring finished parts

CNC Machinist Jobs
Large production companies and smaller job shops both employ CNC machinists. Applicants with relevant training who meet an employer’s requirements may be well positioned for available roles.
CNC Programming Training
After working as machine operators, some machinists choose to move into CNC programming. Programming requires broader knowledge than loading parts and setting up a machine. A programmer needs a strong understanding of CNC codes and should be capable of writing part programs.
Programming can be learned on the job with guidance from an experienced machinist or through machining and CNC programming courses at a technical school.
Becoming proficient at writing programs and using CAD/CAM software takes time. Programmers may earn more than machine operators because of the additional knowledge and experience the role requires.
