2 vs. 3 Axis Machining – CNC Profiling
Traditional 2-axis milling commonly coordinates movement along the X and Y axes to machine inside or outside profiles. Adding coordinated movement involving the Z axis expands the range of contours a CNC mill can produce and may reduce cycle time for suitable parts.
Programming planes
- G17 selects the XY plane.
- G18 selects the XZ plane.
- G19 selects the YZ plane.
When programming by hand, select the appropriate plane before defining coordinated moves or arcs. For example, a YZ-plane operation requires G19; returning to conventional XY machining requires G17. New programs should be verified with simulation or rendering software before being run on a machine.
CNC Software for Machining – What Is the Best CAD/CAM System?
The right CNC software depends on the machine, the complexity of the parts, and the programmer’s experience. A straightforward 2-axis or 3-axis vertical-mill workflow may not require the most expensive system.
CAD and CAM
- CAD is used to create part drawings, models, fixtures, and assemblies.
- CAM converts machining geometry and operation settings into toolpaths and CNC code.
CAM can reduce the time required to program repetitive or complex material-removal operations. Typical setup choices include stock dimensions, work offsets, cutting tools, toolpath strategies, depths of cut, and entry or exit behavior.
Ease of use matters for beginners, while support for advanced operations becomes more important as work grows more complex. Machinists should compare systems according to the work they perform, including 2-axis milling, multi-axis milling, turning, or live-tool operations.
