CNC Machinist Jobs
CNC machinists manufacture parts from technical drawings using computer-controlled mills, lathes, and related equipment. The exact role varies by employer. A production operator may repeatedly load and inspect parts, while an experienced setup machinist may prepare fixtures, establish offsets, prove out programs, and troubleshoot the machining process.
Common Responsibilities
- Read blueprints, dimensions, tolerances, and machining instructions.
- Load material, tools, fixtures, and CNC programs.
- Set work coordinates and tool offsets.
- Operate machines and monitor cutting conditions.
- Inspect finished parts with calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measuring equipment.
- Deburr parts and document inspection results.
- Correct minor process problems or report them to a programmer, engineer, or supervisor.
- Follow machine-shop safety and quality procedures.
Skills Employers Commonly Value
Entry-level candidates benefit from mechanical aptitude, careful work habits, basic shop mathematics, and an ability to follow written procedures. Blueprint reading and accurate measurement are especially important because machinists must determine whether a part meets its specified tolerances.
More advanced positions may require experience with machine setup, workholding, cutting-tool selection, feeds and speeds, G-code editing, process troubleshooting, or CAD/CAM software.
