Machinery’s Handbook Review
Machinery’s Handbook—An Everyday Machinist Tool
Machinery’s Handbook is a valuable first reference for machinists and engineers. It contains extensive formulas, charts, tables, and technical information useful in everyday shop work.
First published in 1914 for mechanical engineers and practical shop mechanics, the handbook has been updated through successive editions. Its subjects include mathematics, materials, machining formulas, threading, and other areas of manufacturing practice.
Machinists can consult it for thread sizes and pitches, cutting-speed information for different materials, trigonometry, thread-dimension calculations, and many other mechanical references. In that sense, it functions much like a technical dictionary for machinists and engineers.
The volume may initially feel difficult to navigate, but frequently used charts and sections become easier to locate with experience.
Is the newest edition necessary?
Not always. A reasonably recent edition may remain useful for most established calculations and reference data. A newer edition is worthwhile when access to updated threads, formulas, charts, standards, and manufacturing information is important.
