Tool Runout vs. Tool Deflection – What Are the Differences?

Tool runout and tool deflection can both make it difficult to hold close tolerances, but they are different problems. Runout occurs when a rotating tool is off its intended axis, causing uneven cutting. Deflection is the bending of a tool under cutting pressure, which can produce tapered or out-of-square features.

Drill, Bore, Ream, Oh Why!?

Drilling, boring, and reaming serve different purposes when producing an accurate hole. The usual order is to drill the initial hole, bore it to improve its position and geometry, and then ream it to achieve the required final size and finish.
